At one a.m. the Richmond Bay campus resembles a magical kingdom. The Bay Area fog drifts through like a scene in a fairy tale. The quad is desolate and quiet. The air is chilly, and Pax holds my hand to keep me warm. He’s so attentive when we’re alone together. He relaxes and protects me. Underneath all his football trophies and fame, he’s a decent guy. We arrive at the rear entrance of my dorm.

“I never got my exclusive interview,” I say.

“No problem. We can meet up again. You have my number.” Pax leans in and whispers, “Thanks for coming to the party. Sorry it got out of hand.”

I feel his warm breath so close to my face, and my spine tingles.

“You’re welcome, but I don’t think your girlfriend liked me,” I tease.

“Who Jen? Jen’s not my girlfriend.”

“Your girlfriend, your hook up, your booty call, your friends-with-benefits, whatever.” My fingers gesture quotation marks in the air.

“I never hooked up with Jen. Do you really think I’d be interested in a girl like that?” he asks, insulted. “Wow, you must think I’m dumb and horny.”

“Well, I don’t think you’re dumb.” My heart skips, relieved he never slept with Jen.

“Gee, thanks.”

“What is your type?” I ask with my inquisitive reporter hat on, but I’m secretly praying he’s attracted to a girl like me.

Pax bites his lower lip. “I guess I don’t really have a specific type. I’m an equal opportunity kind of guy.” He focuses on me. “What about you? What’s your type?”

Without hesitation I rattle. “I like a guy who’s well-read, smart, funny, ambitious, considerate—”

“And rich and tall, with a nice car and a seven-figure career, and blah, blah, blah.” He rolls his eyes. “Girls like you are too much.”

“Girls like me? Excuse me, but I don’t apologize for having high standards.”

“What about physical attraction? Does that count?”

“Of course it does, but most women are attracted to a guy’s personality more than his physical appearance.”

“Really, is that true? You sound so sure of yourself.” His tone is dismissive.

“That’s because I am.”

“What about the time we met in the locker room?”

“What about it?”

“Were you attracted to me?”

Oh my god! He knows. Am I so obvious? I’m embarrassed but act calm.

“No, I was there to do my job.”

“You practically fainted, and you stared at my chest and ass the entire time.”

I lick my lips with the image of his Tarzan pecs, tree trunk thighs, and his buns of steel. “No, that’s ridiculous. I was suffering from heatstroke.”

“Are you having heatstroke right now?” He points at me. “Your face is bright red. Why don’t you just admit you’re attracted to me and you wanted to back out of the story because of it.”

He doesn’t care what I think. This jerk wants me to stroke his ego at my expense. Blood boils in my veins.

“You think you’re hot shit, don’t you? You believe every girl on campus worships you. You probably think every guy is in love with you too.” My temper fumes. “Oh yes, I’m in love with Paxton Moore because he can run and catch a football.
